Researchers from 3B’s Research Group, UMinho, in collaboration with University of Stanford, developed a new class of natural sugar-based hydrogel optical fibers

last updated: 2022-03-07

In a recent work published in the front cover of Advanced Materials, researchers from 3B’s Research Group, University of Minho, in collaboration with Canary Center for Cancer Early Detection, University of Stanford, developed a new class of natural sugar-based hydrogel optical fibers. These flexible hydrogel structures enable the optical detection of processes such as mechanical deformation and the presence of biotargets such as SARS-CoV-2 viruses. Moreover, these innovative fibers can guide light while simultaneously transporting living entities, as human cells.

Manuela Gomes has been attibutted an ERC Proof of Concept grant, entitled BioCHIPS

last updated: 2022-03-07

Manuela Gomes, Associate Professor of 3B's Research Group, I3Bs, University of Minho and President of I3Bs Institute, has been attibutted an ERC Proof of Concept grant, entitled BioCHIPS, with the main objetive of biofabricating microfluidic CHIPS based on self assembling of Cellulose Nanocrystals (CNCs) that recreate with very high fidelity the hierarchical fibrillar structure of human tissues ECM, thus providing a suitable biomimetic platform for organ/tissue-on-a-chip applications.
