The annual Highly Cited Researchers 2023 list from Clarivate (responsible for the Web of Science, considered the most relevant database for science) has just been published.

The highly anticipated annual list identifies researchers who demonstrated significant influence in their chosen field or fields through the publication of multiple highly cited papers during the last decade. Their names are drawn from the publications that rank in the top 1% by citations for field and publication year in the Web of Science citation index. Scientists listed are many times mentioned to be the World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds.

This year only 6849 scientists made the list. That is because of out of nearly 8 million researchers active in the world over the last decade, less than 1% have published multiple papers frequently cited by their peers that rank in the top 1% of citations for their field (or more than one field) and a year.

There are only 19 researchers listed working in Portugal. From those, Rui L. Reis, the President/Dean of I3Bs and Founding Director of the 3B´s Research Group – Biomaterials, Biodegradables and Biomimetics of University of Minho is the scientist with more citations (almost 63000) to his work and more publications listed in Clarivate Web of Science, being also by far the highly cited scientist working in Portugal with higher h-index (115, the only one above 100).
