Abstract | Advances in Tissue Engineering (TE) are changing the paradigm of cell culture, by altering it from 2D to 3D. This is enabling the ability to improve the complexity of in vitro created tissues1. Along with the 3D structures, in vitro disease modeling better mimics the native environment, allowing the pre-clinical trials to be more efficient in the future. However, cell culture systems, as tissue culture well-plates and bioreactors, are not evolving at the same speed rate of the constructs being reported in the TE field. There are now some cell culture platforms for spheroids and small constructs. However there is a lack of technology adapted to recreate tissue interfaces or barriers (figure 1) which are essential for drug efficacy and regenerative medicine, as skin, pulmonary or intestinal membranes or even osteochondral and bone-tendon interfaces, for which we developed a cell culture system.
