Abstract Text

Treating lesions and tissue disorders in the body through tissue engineering and regenerative medicine has been extensively studied since the last few decades. There have been several advances both involving technologies and therapies to address the challenges in the clinics. Scaffolds are one of the components in tissue engineering that can provide temporary support to cells and modulate tissue regeneration. Thus, the engineering of scaffolds has been a hot topic of research. The performance of the scaffold in the body depends on many factors including the parameters related to the scaffold and the parameters related to other components of the regenerative strategy, i.e., cells and stimulating factors. While there is also a lot of research has been recently published on conventionally produced scaffolds, the 3D-(bio)printed scaffolds constitute a large space as the state-of-the-art. In this chapter, the relevant works on the engineering and production scaffolds for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine are overviewed. We believe that the current challenges and limitations of the current scaffolds will be addressed in the near future, and it would be possible to treat the patients with a success that was not possible before.
